tonight, my message to senator harry reid. plus the american people are getting ripped off by a congress that just isn't working. congressman rick nolan, there 30 years ago. he is back now and he can't believe the difference. he is wondering, are we getting paid for this? >>> is it really an admission of guilt if you don't show any remorse? >> it did not even feel wrong? >> no. it's scary. >> did you feel bad about it? >> no. even scarier. >> psychologist dr. jeffrey gardere on lance armstrong's bizarre performance last night. >> good to have you with us tonight, folks. thanks for watching. republicans surrendered today in one of his biggest fights. president obama warned republicans about taking the debt ceiling hostage. it looks like they heard the message. >> the financial well-being of the american people is not leverage to be used. the full faith and credit of the united states of america is not a bargaining chip. and they better choose quickly because time is rung short. >> republicans made their choice during a gop retr

here is senate minority leader -- majority leader harry reid. >> i've had some positive meetings with senator mcconnell before the recess, during the recess our staffs worked on this. we had another meeting today. and i hope within the next 24 to 36 hours we can get something that we agree on. if not, we're going to move forward on what i think needs to be done. the caucus will support me on that. >> so if you don't get agreement, does that mean you'll move forward with the 51 vote? >> yes. >> reid is willing to move forward with filibuster reform with only 51 votes. an option called poisonous by republicans, which is amazing when you think about it. meaningful filibuster reform would bring back the talking filibuster. if republicans wanted to block a simple up or down vote on a bill, they would have to hold the floor, just like the old days. the 60-vote super majority filibuster has been abused by republicans like never before in history. this chart shows just how much the filibuster has been used from 1917 to 2012. the huge spike came in 2008 when president obama took office. republ

today senator majority leader harry reid seemed to clarify his position somewhat. in a statement he said, "i am committed to ensuring the senate will consider legislation that addresses gun violence and other aspects of violence in our society early this year. all options should be on the table." well, that sounds a little bit better. but there should be no hedging on this issue whatsoever. especially from democrats. because if they side with the president of the united states think about what president obama has done for the progressive movement in this country in the democratic party. how can you not stand with him on this? how much more information do these lawmakers need? have we not covered it enough? other democratic senators with high ratings from the national rifle association have also refused to say if they support the president's package. max baucus of montana, senator heidi heitkamp of north dakota, senator johnson of south dakota. senator donnelley of indiana. senator begich of alaska, senator manchin of west virginia, senator tester of montana. howeve

. >> what about harry reid over the weekend and some senate democrats who communicated with the white house on friday, saying do what you have to do. what is your response to that? >> well, my belief is that the president should use every power that is vested in him by the constitution. and i personally think that there are ways in which he can say i am going to maintain the credit of this country. i'm going to borrow the money. if they want to fight me over it, then go to the supreme court and fight it out there. i don't think the president can be responsible and let this country go into the tank when you've got the whole economy of the world in very shaky shape today. you can't -- you're not playing with little stuff here. you're playing with the whole world economy. and i think the president knows that. and he will do what he has to do. >> congressman jim mcdermott, good to have you with us tonight on "the ed show." thank you so much. remember to answer tonight's question there at the bottom of the screen. share your thoughts with us on twitter at edshow and facebook. of course, we
